History of The Sabinal United Methodist Church

The United Methodist Church began in Sabinal, Texas, in 1878 as a part

of the Sabinal Circuit of the San Antonio District of the West Texas Conference.

Henry T. Hill was the first circuit riding pastor.

On June 26, 1907, the site on which the church currently stands was purchased

and the sanctuary building was built that same year. It initially had two towers

in front but the church was growing and in 1912 a third tower was added to

provide classroom space. In 1927 an addition was built on the rear of the sanctuary

to accommodate a Fellowship Hall, kitchen, and three more classrooms.

The church continued to grow and after WW II more space was needed. Plans

were made to build a new Education Building which was dedicated in 1960. This

building is still in use today. Later the third tower and old fellowship hall were

demolished and the church took on the appearance it has today.

In the 1980's a major renovation of the sanctuary was done. The stained glass windows

that grace the sanctuary today were installed during that renovation as well as a

complete remodeling of the interior of the sanctuary.

In the 1990's more ground was acquired and a park built for the use of the community.

For over 100 years God has been at work through the First United Methodist Church

of Sabinal to bless the people of the community. May God continue to bless this church.
